Space database creates and maintains large portfolios of accurate drawing and area data for real estate clients. We also work hard on developing ways for landlords to maximize the value they can get out of this information. Here are some examples of ways we have helped clients get their drawings working for them.
Data Driven Websites
At Space Database, we have recently developed an API (a way for web designers and programmers to use our content in other applications and sites). This feature allows our clients to more closely integrate with us - it ensures that their data is always accurate and up to date. At the same time it saves time and money.
Another benefit of the API is that we are now able to automatically produce entire building websites in an automated manner. Here's how it works:
- Content for the website is output in a structured data format (XML or JSON). This includes text, pictures, availability and stacking plan data.
- A small application transforms the data into browser ready HTML
- A separate file (CSS) contains the branding and 'style' of the site. Any building can thereby appear within any branded 'skin'
Here are some examples:
1145 Hunt Club and 1 Antares Dr. are two buildings owned by GE Capital in Ottawa. We've created mini-marketing sites for each building simply using the data-feed of our API. We used GE's web branding to skin the site. Now that we've developed the template and the skin, we can easily turn on sites for all of GE's hosted buildings as soon as they are required.
Data driven website for 1145 Hunt Club
901 King Street is a building that has its own unique brand: King West Place. We have used the colours and graphics of this brand to skin the content of this building. For 901 King St, we also developed a Blackberry formatted skin to allow the landlord to send out availability data on the building as an email campaign.

Graphic Stacking Plan for 121 King St. West
The Standard Life Centre at 121 King St. West is the flagship of Standard Life's real estate portfolio in Toronto. It is a architecturally distinct building. Standard Life and the leasing agent Colliers wanted to convey the unique appearance of the building through the graphics of the stacking plan. There was also a requirement to display not only current leasing opportunities, but also future ones. We came up with a solution which uses a graphic rendering of the building facade as a background.
Embedded Stacking Plan for 121 King St. West
Available space is indicated as colour-coded semi-transparent rectangles that hover over the available space. Since the stacking plan is completely data-driven, any changes made in the Space Database Application are immediately reflected on the stack. This stacking plan has been incorporated into the marketing site that Colliers developed for the building.
Colliers International
In January and February we ran an interactive web ad for Colliers in the Report on Business section of the Globe and Mail. It was a database driven ad that fit the marketing content for six buildings into a single standard sized web ad. Clicking on the pictures got you more detail. You could follow the links to more content.
These new Space Database ads have several advantages:
- First, by combining several buildings in a single ad, it is possible to sub-divide the cost between several buildings.
- Next, by using interactive elements, we can include detailed content in a small ad space.
- Finally, and most importantly, these ads allow you to reach a large audience and to engage with prospective tenants much earlier in the decision making process.
Morguard
Morguard recently reworked their website. It includes an integrated view of six Morguard companies, three of which are public.
Morguard chose to outsource the management of stacking plans, availability reports and drawings to Space Database. Here is their rationale:
"The key advantage of outsourcing this role is that it gets done and it gets done consistently, accurately and timely. Without this service, our ability to provide availability information was inconsistent. Some regions do this well yet others don't. Outsourcing provides us the ability to create a consistent marketing program and reduces the administrative burden on Leasing Managers so they can spend more time leasing space."
